The Impact You’ll Make in this RoleThe person hired for the position of Food Safety Department Quality Engineer/Microbiologist will be responsible for providing quality support for a variety of 3M Food Safety products.  The product lines include Chemical Detection Kits, MLS (microbial luminescence system) and Clean Trace System.

As an Advance Quality Engineer/Microbiologist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Responsible for quality assurance for assigned products.
  • Responsible as the primary spokesperson for product quality for assigned products.
  • Working with suppliers on quality investigation and improvement opportunities.
  • Team member for quality improvement projects to increase customer satisfaction and reduce cost.
  • Assessing and validating test methods and performing cross-over studies.
  • Evaluating product and process changes for impact on quality.
  • Participating in efforts to improve product quality and process capability.
  • Conducting and analyzing shelf life and stability studies to set and validate product claims.
  • Organizing studies and direct laboratory activities of assigned technicians.
  • Assuring compliance to internal SOPs and external regulations.
  • Evaluating customer samples and trends to determine necessary actions/improvements.
  • Helping to foster a quality environment & mindset throughout the business.
  • The applicant will work and interact with other functions (product development, manufacturing, regulatory, technical service, and business).
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, excellent attention to detail, and be process and system oriented.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • One (1) combined year of laboratory, quality and/or manufacturing experience in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Experience working with microbiological techniques and application

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Microbiology, Molecular Biology or related discipline from an accredited institution
  • Three (3) years of microbiological experience
  • ASQ Certification (e.g. CQE, CQI, CQA, etc.)
  • Statistical knowledge and practice (Design Experiments, Sampling Plans, SPC, ANOVA and Regressions, Product and Process Understanding (PPU) and Six Sigma)
  • Experience working in a microbiology laboratory and using aseptic technique
  • Detail oriented and ability to multi-task
  • Strong collaboration skills

Travel:  May include up to 10% domestic
