Engineering Manager

This leader comes from a solid background in building internet scale consumer products and has coached & grown teams in the past. A successful person in this role will be unafraid to start from the customer problem, get into the details, guide teams with architecture & design, own end-toend delivery of product with high quality while working in coordination with Engineers, Product Management, Architects, UX and Operational peers.

This role is for an Engineering Manager with flights team. This team powers the flight shopping and booking experience for millions of travelers across the world. We are always striving to provide the best experience and value for our customers.The Flights platform supports more than 40 million transactions per year. The team openly embraces experimenting with new technologies while keeping a healthy balance between short- and long-term goals. With our microservices architecture in AWS using EC2, S3 and ECS services you will be working on building next generation customer experience using PWA & GraphQL, developing features and services, and pushing the boundaries on platform performance and capabilities.

Responsibilities for this role will span all aspects of product development - design, development, quality, scale, performance, operations in order to deliver the next-generation flights shopping experience for Expedia customers. In addition, you will be responsible for leading the pack of high performing engineers, carving their career growth & mentoring. You will need to be comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment which consists of highly matrixed, geo-located teams who are partnering with various global technology teams across all of Expedia.

What you’ll do:  

  • You’ll be responsible to grow and shape the incredible, talented & motivated team around their goals, ownership and career

  • You'll foster a healthy and collaborative culture across teams at multiple locations

  • You’ll ensure your team delivers high quality & on-time products and continuously innovates to improve engineering efficiency

  • Drive evolution of standards & design patterns with industry best practices and new technology to enhance productivity, quality, and system performance.

  • Drive program & system architecture discussions to identify a suitable quality solution to the business requirement.

  • Work closely with architecture & data platform teams to craft technical principles & strategy

Who you are:  

You’ll fit this role if the information below matches your experience:  

  • 12+ years of experience, 4+ in technical leadership 

  • Hands-on technologist with experience in Java, Spring, microservices, REST APIs, public cloud services 

  • Ability to comfortably work in a fast paced, often ambiguous and multi-matrix environment 

  • Ability to actively identify upcoming risks, issues, and bottlenecks and resolve issues that sometimes-cross departmental boundaries 

  • Ability to estimate, schedule and manage/track multiple concurrent projects 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Excellent time management, resource management and planning skills 

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a technical field (e.g. computer science, engineering)
