We’re looking for people who want to focus on developing and supporting engineers to join as Associate Engineering Managers where you will learn and develop your people management skills in a safe, encouraging and supportive environment and progress into an Engineering Manager role.
Engineers work in interdisciplinary squads arranged around a mission, with clear responsibilities and objectives, and the right people in the team to independently ship from their own roadmap. Engineering Managers are separate from delivery squads, focusing on managing high performance and development for engineers across more than one team. Your focus will be on helping each of them with their personal and professional development, listening, guiding them through hard times and celebrating their successes.
You’ll spend your time:
- supporting, coaching and developing 4-5 high performing engineers through regular 1:1s, continuous feedback and relationships with team leads.
- developing your people management skills, through a combination of peer mentoring, community support, training, books, conferences and on the job experience with lots of support from your own manager, who will be an experienced Engineering Manager.
- contributing to projects with other Engineering Managers that help us scaling engineering at Monzo (you can see a list of example projects on our Engineering Manager description).
You should apply if:

- you have previously managed 1 or 2 software engineers at a time or have worked in a role where you have had to support/mentor other software engineers (but not been their manager).

What progression looks like:
as an Associate Engineering Manager you will be expected to manage 4-5 engineers to gain experience and give you the opportunity to develop your people management skills and abilities.
over time, we would expect you to progress into becoming an Engineering Manager, managing 8-12 engineers over a 12 month period, depending on how well you're doing.
What support you'll have:
- you will be managed by an experienced Engineering Manager who will support you and help you grow in your role and develop your people management skills, through regular 1:1s, coaching and mentoring.
- an annual training budget of £1000 to spend on books, training, conferences that will help learn and grow as a manager.
- we have a regular manager roundtable, a safe and confidential environment where you can bring anything you're struggling with and seek the advice of our many experienced Engineering Managers from across Monzo.
- the support of any and all of our Engineering Managers, we regularly have 1:1s with each other for guidance and support.
- the support of a fantastic People team who will be there to help guide you through the harder aspects of people management.

The interview process consists of a 45-60 minute phone call, followed by 2 hours of face to face interviews at our office in Moorgate, London. Sometimes, we arrange a follow-up interview to discuss the feedback from the first onsite stage.

We regularly run hackathons in which people build things on our third party API and we contribute to open source software as much as possible. We offer competitive salaries based on skills and experience, which could be anywhere between £60,000 - £75,000 per year.
