Skyscanner is a leading global travel search site and app, a place where people are inspired to plan and book direct from millions of travel options at the best prices. We employ over 1000 staff across ten offices globally, and, having reached market leader status, we were recently acquired by Chinese online travel company Ctrip in a deal valued at £1.4bn. While we remain operationally independent, our acquisition by Ctrip allows us to take the business to the next level of accelerated global growth. It’s a hugely exciting time for Skyscanner and the over 80m people who use us every month. We are unbiased and free, and our secret is in our unique proprietary technology that connects people directly to everything the travel industry has to offer.

Skyscanner operates in a Tribes and Squads model and we have built an engineering culture where there is a high level of trust, autonomy and transparency.

Our engineers work in autonomous squads where they can create their own backlog, ship code whenever they want and don’t have dependencies in order to deliver to their customer (be that travellers, partners or internal customers). Our core product engine uses global scale services, big data and machine learning to assemble, normalise and make sense of real time information from our thousands of partners, and we look to apply the same engineering practices and discipline to our internally facing services. Skyscanner can offer you large scale, complex problems whilst enjoying a high level of responsibility, autonomy and influence, within a flexible working environment designed to help you thrive.

Our engineering principles are:

  • We have a clear definition of success for every piece of work.
  • We ship multiple times a day and deliver customer value week in, week out.
  • We use design reviews to validate every significant change.
  • We deliver our products using our defined technology standards.
  • We peer review every change.
  • Our Definitions of Done include being live in production… responsibly.
  • You build it, you run it.

Most importantly, these are organic beliefs. We iterate. We learn. We grow. And our principles adapt with us

If you enjoy identifying opportunities to automate manual activities, and then overcoming the technical challenges associated, then this could be the place for you. You’ll need an interest and focus on security, data engineering/ETL, cloud services, real time accuracy, and building APIs. If you have that, this is the opportunity for you to utilise your experience to have a direct impact on the development of the internal systems and tools to power the next phase of Skyscanner growth.

What you can expect as a senior software engineer

  • A supportive, trusting and transparent working environment.
  • A place to look at things differently and challenge and offer solutions.
  • Overall responsibility of multiple key service components within your area.
  • You will define and implement services that make up a complex sub system.
  • Collaboration across all relevant business areas.
  • An opportunity to learn from the similarly great minds around you

For this specific role you can also expect a wider variety of work including direct interaction with  internal customers to capture user stories/build backlogs, time spent as the point of contact for the team (Greenflag), servicing the ad-hoc queries and providing first line support for any issues which come up, plus basic administration/configuration activity associated with our core ‘off the shelf’ systems.

What we are looking for

  • Previous job experience as a software engineer in both Front and Back-End technologies and development, ideally where confidentiality and security were important considerations.
  • Metrics driven approach to decision making, prioritisation and continuous deployment.
  • Use of methodologies for continuous delivery and improvement.
  • Comfortable balancing trade offs between technical, analytical and customer needs.
  • Strong customer focus and a focus on impactful work.
  • You make others better through code reviews, documentation, technical guidance and mentoring.
  • You will work with or lead within your team to break down solutions into small tasks to be completed autonomously.
  • It would be useful to have experience of system deployment to AWS.
  • Capable of working with others to build a new frontend codebase from scratch, enabling us to scale through component driven development
  • You’re excited by modern frontend technologies and frameworks, such as: ES6, Sass/Less, Webpack, npm, React, and HTML, CSS
  • We don’t expect you to be a backend expert but would anticipate experience in some server side scripting technologies, such as: Node.js, Python, Java, .NET.
  • Experience in the following technologies would be great but by no means essential - Docker, GraphQL, REST, NoSQL, PostgreSQL, Drone CI, AWS: Lambda, SQS, ECS.
  • Experience of using Salesforce APIs would be an advantage too.

What else can we offer you……

We also provide for your health with medical insurance, health screening options, headspace subscription and an employee assistance programme to support you and your loved ones.

Then it gets really interesting, and you can buy more holiday, donate to a good cause, take part in 2 hackdays per year, and 1 charity day, work from your home country for up to 3 weeks, spend up to 30 days working from another of our offices globally, and you have the option to take part in Skyscanner extended annual leave which is an additional 3 weeks’ break (unpaid) after 3 years’ service or take 5 weeks’ break (paid) after 5 years’ service.
